WhatsApp for Grandparents: A Gentle Introduction
As a technology educator for nearly two decades, I've seen firsthand the joy and connection WhatsApp brings to families. It's truly a game-changer for staying in touch, and I'm here to show you how simple it can be.

Hello, my dear readers! Suzy Ahn here, and today we're diving into an app that has truly revolutionized how families stay connected: WhatsApp. For nearly eighteen years, I've had the immense privilege of teaching older adults the ins and outs of their smartphones, and I've seen firsthand the sheer delight that lights up their faces when they successfully make their first video call to a grandchild overseas using WhatsApp. It's a wonderful tool, and I promise you, it's much simpler than it might seem.
I know many of you might feel a bit daunted by new technology, and that's perfectly normal. I remember last spring, a lovely 82-year-old gentleman, Mr. Henderson, came to my class feeling utterly overwhelmed by his new iPhone 15. His daughter had insisted he get WhatsApp to see photos of his great-granddaughter. He kept saying, "Suzy, it's like learning a new language!" And in a way, he was right! But by the end of our session, he was confidently sending messages and even trying out an emoji or two. It truly warmed my heart. My goal today is to make you feel just as confident. We'll go step-by-step, gently, just like I do in my classroom.
Getting Started with WhatsApp
So, what exactly *is* WhatsApp? Think of it as a super-powered messaging app that lets you send text messages, make phone calls, and even video calls using your internet connection, instead of your mobile plan's minutes or texts. The best part? It's free to download and use! This is fantastic, especially if you have family living in different countries, as it avoids those expensive international calling charges. You just need a reliable Wi-Fi connection or mobile data.
Many of you might already be familiar with your phone's built-in messaging app (often called 'Messages' on an iPhone or 'Messages' by Google on Android phones). WhatsApp offers similar features, but it's particularly popular because almost everyone has it, making it a universal way to communicate across different types of phones and even different countries. It's also known for its strong privacy features, using 'end-to-end encryption' – a fancy way of saying your messages are very secure and private.
Downloading WhatsApp to Your Smartphone
The first step getting started is downloading the WhatsApp app to your smartphone. Don't worry, this is a very common task that you'll do for many apps.
For iPhone users (iOS 17 or later):
- Look for the App Store icon on your home screen. It's a blue icon with a white 'A' in the middle. Tap on it.
- Once in the App Store, you'll see a search bar at the bottom or top of the screen. Tap on Search (it looks like a magnifying glass).
- In the search bar, type "WhatsApp Messenger" and then tap Search on your keyboard.
- You'll see "WhatsApp Messenger" by WhatsApp LLC. Tap the GET button next to it. It might also show a cloud icon with a down arrow if you've downloaded it before.
- Your iPhone will ask you to confirm. You might need to use Face ID (look at your phone), Touch ID (press your finger on the Home button), or enter your Apple ID password.
- Once it's downloaded and installed (you'll see a progress circle), the GET button will change to OPEN. You can tap OPEN right away, or find the new green WhatsApp icon on one of your home screens (it looks like a green speech bubble with a white phone inside).
For Android users (Android 14 or later, e.g., Samsung Galaxy S24, Google Pixel 8):
- Find the Play Store icon on your home screen or in your app drawer. It's a colorful triangular icon. Tap on it.
- Once in the Play Store, you'll see a search bar at the top, usually saying "Search apps & games." Tap on that.
- Type "WhatsApp Messenger" into the search bar and tap the search icon (magnifying glass) on your keyboard.
- You'll see "WhatsApp Messenger" by WhatsApp LLC. Tap the Install button.
- The app will download and install. This might take a minute or two depending on your internet speed.
- Once installed, the Install button will change to Open. You can tap Open to launch it immediately, or find the new green WhatsApp icon on your home screen or in your app drawer.

Setting Up Your WhatsApp Profile
Once WhatsApp is installed, it's time to set it up! This involves a few simple steps to get you ready to connect.
- Open WhatsApp: Tap the green WhatsApp icon.
- Agree and Continue: You'll see a welcome screen with terms of service. Read them if you like, then tap Agree & Continue.
- Enter Your Phone Number: WhatsApp uses your phone number as your unique identifier. Enter your current mobile phone number. Make sure you don't include spaces or dashes, just the digits.
- Verify Your Number: WhatsApp will send a text message (SMS) with a 6-digit verification code to the phone number you entered. Most modern phones will automatically detect and fill in this code for you. If not, open your phone's default text messaging app, find the message from WhatsApp, remember the code, and then switch back to WhatsApp and type it in. This step is crucial for security, ensuring it's really you setting up the account.
- Set Up Your Profile Information:
- Profile Picture: This is optional, but I highly recommend adding a picture! It helps your family and friends recognize you. Tap the camera icon, and you can choose to "Take Photo" (to take a new one) or "Choose Photo" (to select one from your phone's gallery). A nice, clear photo of your smiling face is perfect!
- Name: Enter your name. This is what others will see when you message them.
- Allow Access (Permissions): WhatsApp will then ask for permission to access your contacts. This is very important! Tap Allow (or OK) when prompted. This lets WhatsApp see which of your existing phone contacts also use WhatsApp, making it easy to find and message them without typing in numbers manually. It will also ask for permission to send you notifications. Again, tap Allow so you get alerts when new messages or calls come in.
And just like that, your WhatsApp profile is ready! If you're encountering any general smartphone setup issues, our articles like iPhone Setup for Seniors or Android Setup for Seniors could be very helpful.
Sending Your First Message
Now for the fun part – sending a message! This is how you'll start connecting with your family and friends.
- Tap the New Chat Icon:
- On iPhone: Look for a square icon with a pen/pencil at the top right corner of the "Chats" screen.
- On Android: Look for a green circular icon with a speech bubble (or sometimes a plus sign) at the bottom right corner of the "Chats" screen.
- Select a Contact: A list of your contacts who also use WhatsApp will appear. Scroll through and tap on the name of the person you want to message.
- Type Your Message: At the bottom of the chat screen, you'll see a text bar that says "Message" or "Type a message." Tap on it to bring up your keyboard. Type what you want to say.
- Send Your Message: After typing, tap the send icon. This usually looks like a paper airplane, often in a green circle. Your message will instantly appear in the chat conversation.
You'll notice little checkmarks next to your messages:
- One gray checkmark: Message sent successfully from your phone.
- Two gray checkmarks: Message delivered to the recipient's phone.
- Two blue checkmarks: The recipient has read your message!
Don't be alarmed if the checkmarks stay gray for a while; sometimes people are busy or not looking at their phones. When I was teaching Mrs. Rodriguez, a spirited 75-year-old, she kept calling me, worried her messages weren't going through because they weren't turning blue! I had to reassure her that patience is a virtue in the digital world, too.
Making Voice and Video Calls
This is where WhatsApp truly shines for grandparents! Free voice and video calls to anyone, anywhere in the world, as long as you both have an internet connection. Imagine seeing your grandchildren's faces in real-time, even if they're thousands of miles away!
To make a call:
- Open a Chat: Go to the chat conversation with the person you want to call. You can do this by tapping on their name in your "Chats" list.
- Tap the Call Icon:
- For a Voice Call: Look for the phone icon (a classic telephone receiver) at the top of the chat screen. Tap it.
- For a Video Call: Look for the video camera icon at the top of the chat screen. Tap it.
- Wait for Connection: WhatsApp will then dial your contact. They will receive a call through the WhatsApp app. Once they answer, your call will begin!
During a video call, you'll see your own face in a smaller window and the other person's face filling most of the screen. You can usually switch cameras (front-facing to rear-facing) or mute your microphone if needed using icons on the screen. Don't worry if your first few calls feel a little awkward; like anything new, it takes a bit of practice. Just enjoy seeing your loved ones!
Group Chats for the Whole Family
Want to send one message to all your children and grandchildren at once? Or share photos with everyone simultaneously? Group chats are the answer!
To create a group chat:
- Tap the New Chat/Compose Icon: (Same icon you used to start a new individual chat: square with a pen on iPhone, green speech bubble on Android).
- Select "New Group": This option will appear at the top of your contacts list. Tap it.
- Add Participants: Scroll through your contacts and tap on everyone you want to add to the group. You can add many people! Once you've selected everyone, tap the arrow or "Next" button.
- Name Your Group: Give your group a descriptive name, like "The Johnson Family" or "Grandma's Crew." You can also add a group photo. This helps everyone easily identify the chat.
- Create Group: Tap "Create" (or the checkmark/green arrow).
Now, anything you type in this group chat will be seen by everyone in the group! It's a fantastic way to share updates, photos, and plan family gatherings. My own sister started a WhatsApp group for our entire extended family, and it's where we share everything from holiday photos to quick

Frequently asked questions
- Is WhatsApp really free?
- Yes, WhatsApp is free to download and use. It uses your phone's internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to send messages and make calls, so you won't incur charges from your mobile carrier for WhatsApp usage itself. If you're using mobile data, it will count towards your data plan.
- Do I need Wi-Fi to use WhatsApp?
- You need an internet connection, which can be either Wi-Fi or your mobile data (4G/5G). If you're not connected to Wi-Fi, WhatsApp will use your phone's mobile data. Be mindful of your data plan if you're making many video calls without Wi-Fi.
- Can I use WhatsApp on my computer?
- Yes! WhatsApp offers a web version (WhatsApp Web) and desktop apps for Windows and Mac. You can link your phone's WhatsApp to your computer to send and receive messages from a larger screen and keyboard. Just search for "WhatsApp Web" in your browser or download the desktop app.
- What do the blue checkmarks mean?
- One gray checkmark means your message has been sent from your phone. Two gray checkmarks mean the message has been successfully delivered to the recipient's phone. Two blue checkmarks mean the recipient has opened and read your message. In group chats, two blue checkmarks appear when everyone in the group has read the message.
- Can I block someone on WhatsApp?
- Yes, you can easily block unwanted contacts. Go to the chat with the person you want to block, tap their name at the top to view their contact info, scroll down, and tap "Block Contact." You will no longer receive messages or calls from them, and they won't be able to see your online status or profile updates.
