How to Set Up a New Android Phone for a Senior (Samsung & Pixel)

Samsung and Pixel have wildly different setup wizards. This guide covers both — including the four post-setup settings that change everything.

Android setup is more variable than iPhone because every manufacturer customizes its wizard. The good news: Samsung and Google Pixel — the two we recommend for seniors — both have a "simple mode" that does most of the visual-comfort work for you. Here is the calm version of each setup.

Before you start

You will need a Google account email and password, the home Wi-Fi password, and about 45 minutes. If you are migrating from an old phone, have it nearby — both Samsung and Pixel have decent transfer tools that handle contacts and photos automatically.

Samsung setup wizard

Power on, pick your language, agree to the legal screens, and connect to Wi-Fi. When asked about "Bring your data," choose Don't copy unless you have an old Samsung — copying from a non-Samsung device often imports clutter that frustrates new users.

Sign in with a Google account. Skip the Samsung account screen for now (you can add it later, and it is not required for daily use). Skip Bixby. Skip everything that says "personalize your ads" or "improve your experience" — turn it all off.

Pixel setup wizard

Pixel's wizard is shorter and cleaner. Sign in with Google, pick a screen lock (a 4-digit PIN is fine for most seniors), and let the phone install updates. When asked about Google Assistant, decide together — Assistant is genuinely useful for seniors ("Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes"), but the voice prompts can also be startling if accidentally triggered.

Turn on Easy Mode (Samsung only)

This is the most important Samsung-only step. Open Settings → Display → Easy mode and turn it on. The home screen layout will simplify, app icons will get larger, contact buttons will get bigger labels, and several less-used features will be hidden. It is fully reversible.

Pixel does not have an Easy Mode, but the four settings below replicate most of the effect.

Four post-setup settings to change immediately

  1. Display → Font size and style: increase font size by two steps; turn on Bold font.
  2. Display → Screen zoom: increase by one or two steps to make icons larger.
  3. Sounds → Ringtone & Volume: set ringtone volume to max, turn on Vibrate while ringing.
  4. Phone app → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection (Samsung) / Call Screen (Pixel): turn on. Pixel's Call Screen is one of the best anti-robocall features on any phone — Google Assistant answers and shows a transcript.

Key takeaways

  • On Samsung, turning on Easy Mode does most of the senior-friendly work for you. Always start there.
  • On Pixel, increase font size and screen zoom, then turn on Call Screen. The phone will start filtering scam calls automatically.
  • Skip Samsung Account, Bixby, and personalized-ad screens during setup. None of them are required.

Frequently asked questions

What is Samsung Easy Mode?
Easy Mode is a Samsung-only setting that simplifies the home screen layout, enlarges icons and contact buttons, and hides advanced features. It is fully reversible and can be toggled at any time in Settings → Display → Easy mode.
Does Pixel have an Easy Mode like Samsung?
No, but you can replicate most of the effect by increasing Font size, Screen zoom, and turning on Call Screen in the Phone app settings.
