About
Smartphone help, written for the people who actually need it.
Astoria Net Shop is an independent publication written for older adults who want clear, jargon-free help with their smartphones — and for the family members who often end up helping them.
Why we exist
Most online guides for smartphones are written by — and for — younger users who grew up with the technology. When an older adult opens one of those articles, they hit jargon in the first paragraph, screenshots that don't match their phone, and an implicit assumption that they already know what "pinch to zoom" or "haptic feedback" means.
We write the opposite kind of guide. Every article on this site is structured around questions our editor has been asked in person, in a real classroom, by a real student who was sitting in front of a real phone. We start where confusion actually starts.
How we make money
Astoria Net Shop is funded by a combination of display advertising, a small number of clearly disclosed affiliate links to phones and accessories we already recommend, and reader contributions. We do not accept payment from device manufacturers, mobile carriers, or app developers in exchange for coverage or positive reviews. We do not run sponsored posts.
When a review includes an affiliate link, we say so at the top of the article. We always link to the same product at multiple retailers when possible so readers can compare prices.
How we test
Recommendations are based on hands-on use by our editor, with input from first-time senior users where possible. We revisit our guides regularly and update them when the underlying apps or operating systems change. We document our process in our editorial policy.
Corrections and accountability
If you find something wrong on this site, please tell us — we will fix it and add a dated correction note at the bottom of the article. Our full process is documented on our fact-checking page. You can reach the editorial team directly at our contact form.
The team
Astoria Net Shop is edited by Suzy Ahn, who personally writes or edits every article published. We work with a small network of subject-matter contributors — occupational therapists, audiologists, and fraud-prevention specialists — who review specific articles before publication.
